Situated in the quaint Lake District village of Hawkshead, the Hawkshead Grammar School Museum gives insight into school life from 1585 to 1909. The classroom houses a collection of historic classroom furniture and artefacts used in the School, some of which date back to the Seventeenth Century.
Hawkshead Grammar School in Hawkshead, Cumbria, England was founded in 1585 by Archbishop Edwin Sandys, the incumbent Archbishop of York, whose family came from the Hawkshead area.
Founded in 1585, Hawkshead Grammar School taught grammar (Latin grammar) and the principles of the Greek tongue and other sciences necessary to be taught in a grammar school. The sciences included arithmetic and geometry sufficient to meet the practical needs of the businessman, surveyor, or navigator.

Wordsworth attended Hawkshead Grammar School from ages 8-16. The school was started in 1585 to educate the sons of Protestant families after the Reformation. It taught Latin and Greek grammar, arithmetic, geometry, sciences, modern history and the classics with the aim of preparing boys for entrance to Cambridge.

The Lake District. In centuries past, promising young gentlemen were sent to Hawkshead Grammar School for their educational foundation. Among the former pupils was a certain William Wordsworth, who attended the school from 1779 to 1787 – you can still see a desk where the naughty young poet carved his name.
