Als Sohn eines Goldschmieds hatte er die feine Hand seines Vaters geerbt. Sein Werk Kavalier im Verkaufsladen aus 1660 zeigt eine Intimszene, in die van Mieris geschickt eine dritte Person als unerwünschten Beobachter eingebaut hat.
