The London and South Western line from Southampton to Dorchester via Ringwood and Wimborne with a branch to Poole was authorised in 1845 (8/9 Vic. cap. xciii) and was opened in June 1847; Poole station was then at Hamworthy and reached by a branch line from Poole Junction, now called Hamworthy Junction.
