In 1889 Pugin's rood screen, which had always aroused controversy among his co-religionists, was removed so that the congregation could have a clear view of the Sanctuary. In 1890 a new chapel in honour of St. Joseph was erected on the south side of the cathedral in memory of Samuel Weld.
