He was also an Orientalist and a poet. Schlegel was a son of a Protestant pastor and a nephew.

Gemeinsam mit seinem Bruder August Wilhelm Schlegel brachte er die zentrale frühromantische Zeitschrift Athenaeum heraus, ab 1820 erschien unter seiner Mithilfe Concordia , eine bedeutende Zeitschrift der Wiener Spätromantik.
