(fn. 13) He was created Baron Ashley in 1661 and earl of Shaftesbury in 1672 and died in 1683. (fn. 14) The manor descended with the earldom of Shaftesbury until the death of Anthony, the 5th earl, in 1811.

Throughout his life he was overshadowed by his brother Anthony Ashley Cooper. He was a student at Exeter College, Oxford in 1642. He joined the parliamentary army and was a captain by 1644 and major by 1646.
