Members of the order Scandentia are omnivorous, feasting on everything from insects to small animals to the "corpse flower" Rafflesia. Oddly enough, they have the highest brain-to-body-size ratio of any living mammal (including humans).
Lists of mammals by region cover mammals found in different parts of the world. They are organized by continent, region, and country, and in some places by sub-national region. Most are full species lists, while those for Australia and the Caribbean have links to more specific species lists.
According to Mammal Species of the World, 5,416 species were identified in 2006. These were grouped into 1,229 genera, 153 families and 29 orders. In 2008, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) completed a five-year Global Mammal Assessment for its IUCN Red List, which counted 5,488 species.

The American Society of Mammalogists’ Public Education Committee has almost completed the new Mammal Species Database that will replace the State Mammal Lists. This new feature will allow users to search for and download lists mammals by state and it will be linked to the Mammal Images Library while and providing distribution information and other notes.
