Fielder didn't "retire" in that sense, he is medically unable to play, which is common -- the strange part is that he's medically unable, permanently. That means he is still entitled to the rest of his contract, since he has not chosen to walk away from the game (at least nominally, which there's no reason for him to actually retire, throwing away the contract and its money).
