Hyderabad ( 1798 ), Mysore ( 1799 ), Awadh ( 1801 ), Peshwa ( 1802 ) signed this treaty with the East India Company.

However, it gained prominence under the tenure of Lord Wellesley, who, during his rule from 1798 to 1805, shifted from a policy of non-intervention to establishing subsidiary alliances.
Subordinate alliance. Wellesley’s policy of subsidiary alliance was an extension of ring fence—which sought to reduce states to a position of dependence on British Government in India. According to this system, every ruler in India had to accept to pay a subsidy to the British for the maintenance of British army.

He fought the fourth Mysore War with Tipu in 1799, annexed most of the territory of Mysore and restored a part of it to the previous Hindu ruler who became a dependent ally of the English.
