The story of the Cullinan II begins with the discovery of the Cullinan diamond, the largest gem-quality rough diamond ever found, weighing an astonishing 3,106.75 carats. Unearthed in 1905 at the Premier No.2 mine in Cullinan, South Africa, the diamond was named after Sir Thomas Cullinan, the mine’s chairman.
The Cullinan Diamond is the largest rough gem-quality diamond ever found, at 3,106.75 carats (621.350 g). It was found by Frederick Wells, surface manager of the Premier Diamond Mining Company in Cullinan, Gauteng, South Africa, on 25 January 1905. The stone was named after Sir Thomas Cullinan, the owner of the diamond mine.

These diamonds were mounted into this brooch for Queen Mary in 1911. The brooch was inherited by Queen Elizabeth II in 1953.

Queen Mary had Cullinan III and IV - a pear-shaped drop of 94.4 carats and a square-cut stone of 63.6 carats - set temporarily in her new crown for the coronation of 1911, but generally she wore the stones hooked together as a brooch (now known as the Cullinan Brooch) in their fine lattice-work setting.
