In the middle ages, the territory of present-day Montenegro was made up of three principalities: Duklja in the south (known as Zeta from the 13th century), Travunia in the west and Rascia in the north.

Cetinje, Montenegro, is located in the southern portion of the country, in the Old Montenegro region, some 20 kilometers south of Montenegro’s capital city, Podgorica. It is situated in the highlands of the Montenegrin mountain range, 600 meters above sea level.

Founded in 1484 by Ivan Crnojević, the monastery is a symbol of Montenegrin spirituality and resistance against the Ottoman rule. The monastery grounds are home to several important relics, including the Right Hand of Saint John the Baptist and a piece of the True Cross.
