“Leman” is the French name for Lake Geneva in Switzerland. Eliot wrote much of “The Waste Land” while convalescing in Lausanne by the lake. The line is also an allusion to Psalm 137, which describes the Israelites being exiled to Babylon: “By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we wept, when we remembered Zion.”
