  3. The Royal Opera House Shop is open from 12noon Monday to Sunday and closes at the start of the evening performance, or at 6pm. We are a cashless venue so please bring a payment card for any purchases. Our shop can be found on the ground floor. There is step-free access from the Bow Street entrance and from the Covent Garden Piazza entrance.

  4. Covent Garden reopened in 1946 and became the home of a permanent opera company, the Royal Opera, and that of Sadler's Wells Ballet, the Royal Ballet. After WWII, the Royal Opera welcomed a succession of great conductors: Karl Rankl (1946-1951), Rafael Kubelik (1955-1958), Georg Solti (1961-1971) and, since 1971, Colin Davis.

The Royal Opera was formed as the Covent Garden Opera Company in 1946, but behind it lies a tradition of operatic performance which goes back for more than 260 years at its home in Covent Garden. In each of the three theatres there have been on the site since 1732, opera has played an important role. The present theatre was built in 1858.
