En Puerto Rico el manatí es más abundante en las costas este y sur, especialmente en Fajardo y Ceiba y en la bahía de Jobos en Guayama y Salinas. También se encuentran en la costa noroeste y suroeste de Vieques, la Bahía de Guayanilla, la Parguera en Lajas, Joyuda y bahía Sucia en Cabo Rojo, y en la desembocadura del río Guanajibo en Mayagüez.
Manatí was founded in 1799 by Don Pedro Menendez Valdes and is named after the manatee, a sea mammal found throughout the Puerto Rico archipelago and the Caribbean. The town is located in the middle of Karst Country ( carso norteño) a topographic zone composed of limestone famous for its hill formations, canyons and caves.
