Biography. Fritz Saxl (1890-1948), historian and director of Warburg Institute, was born in Vienna, on 8 January 1890. Educated at the Maximilian Gymnasium in Vienna and at the universities of Vienna and Berlin, he began his scholarly career with research into the authenticity and dating of Rembrandt's drawings; this work was published in 1912.
Fritz Saxl studierte Kunstgeschichte an der Universität Wien, habilitierte sich in Hamburg und ein zweites Mal in London. Im Zuge seiner Anstellung bei dem Kunsthistoriker und Kulturtheoretiker Aby Warburg spezialisierte er sich auf den Gebieten der Kunst Rembrandts und seiner Zeit, mittelalterlicher Astrologiegeschichte und spätantiker Religions- und Kunstgeschichte.
