Thomas Conolly's great-uncle was William Conolly (qv), known as ‘Speaker’ Conolly. After an education at Westminster School (from 1750 to 1754) and at the Académie de Genève (1755), and a grand tour (he was in Rome by 1758), he married, on 30 December 1758, Louisa Augusta Lennox, third daughter of the 2nd duke of Richmond (1701–50).

Lady Louisa’s death in 1821 ended an era at Castletown. The Conolly estates, including Castletown, were inherited by Thomas Conolly’s grandnephew Edward Pakenham (1786–1848). Under the terms of Conolly’s will, Edward was required to change his name to Conolly.
