Clive had not recovered from the death on 14 Apr. of his heir apparent Edward, a colonel in the Grenadier Guards, who, despite several highly publicised liaisons, had never married.[footnote] Whitfield and most of his Warwickshire and Irish estates passed to his son the Rev. Archer Clive, rector of Solihull, whose wife Caroline (1801-73) was a well known writer.
