William David Ormsby-Gore was born into an Anglo-Irish aristocratic family on 20 May 1918 in Westminster, London, the second son of William Ormsby-Gore, 4th Baron Harlech, a Conservative politician, and Lady Beatrice Edith Mildred Gascoyne-Cecil. Personal life. Harlech is a great-great-great-grandson of Robert Gascoyne-Cecil, 3rd Marquess of Salisbury, who served as British prime minister. His father was Francis Ormsby-Gore, 6th Baron Harlech, a Conservative peer, and his mother was Amanda Ormsby-Gore (née Grieve), a creative consultant and writer.

Francis was the grandson of the fourth to hold the title Baron Harlech. But the eldest son of Francis’s uncle was killed in a car accident in the 1930s and the title, along with 8,000 acres of land on two estates in Shropshire and Gwynedd, passed to Francis’s father, after the death of William Ormsby-Gore, 4th Baron Harlech in 1964.
