Jesus College has had Welsh connections since its founding in 1571, although our students now come from all over the UK and abroad. In 2022, we opened the Cheng Yu Tung Building on our historic site, which houses new study and teaching spaces, graduate facilities, a multi-faith prayer room, and a café. We are due to open an onsite gym in 2024.
The College was founded in 1571 by Queen Elizabeth 1, at the request of a Welsh lawyer and clergyman called Hugh Price, and our beautiful Dining Hall, Chapel, and Principal’s Lodgings are still used for their original purposes today. Jesus College was founded in June 1571 by a group of Welshmen led by Hugh Price, a lawyer, clergyman and Treasurer of St. David’s Cathedral. In approving the new foundation however, Queen Elizabeth I appointed herself its Foundress, and Jesus became the first and only Oxford College to be founded during the monarch’s reign.
