Luc Nilis begon zijn carrière in de jaren ‘80 en kwam door zijn talent al snel op de radar van de Belgische topclub RSC Anderlecht. In de kranten spraken ze al over het grootste talent van België. In 224 wedstrijden voor Anderlecht scoorde hij maar liefst 127 keer. In 1989 kwam de succestrainer Aad de Mos aan het roer bij Anderlecht.
