Overview. Gwynplaine, son of Lord Clancharlie, has a permanent smile carved on his face by the King, in revenge for Gwynplaine's father's treachery. The Man Who Laughs is a terrifically sad film and a tale of the pain that humans can administer to each other. Permanently deformed by the king in response to the actions of his father, the boy Gwynplaine is sent into a travelling freak show to serve his life sentence being ridiculed and looked down upon while falling for Dea, a blind girl.
