5 de jun. de 2024 · William Carey (born August 17, 1761, Paulerspury, Northamptonshire, England—died June 9, 1834, Frederiksnagar [now Shrirampur], India) was the founder of the English Baptist Missionary Society (1792), a lifelong missionary to India, and an educator whose mission at Shrirampur (Serampore) set the pattern for modern missionary work.

William Carey fue un misionero inglés y ministro bautista de la Sociedad Misionera Bautista, traductor, reformador social y antropólogo cultural que fundó el Serampore College y la Serampore University, la primera universidad que otorga títulos en la India, conocido como el padre de las misiones modernas.
William Carey entstammte einer Weberfamilie aus Northampton und erlernte zunächst das Handwerk eines Schuhmachers. Nach einer bewussten Hinkehr zum christlichen Glauben schloss er sich 1783 einer Baptistengemeinde an. Diese berief ihn 1785 zu ihrem Pastor.
En 1793, William Carey dio un paso significativo en su vida: él y su familia partieron hacia la India, marcando el comienzo de un ministerio que duraría cuatro décadas.
