Annie Besant werd geboren als Annie Wood en kwam uit een Ierse familie. Op zeer jonge leeftijd stierf haar vader. Hij liet het gezin zonder geld achter. Omdat haar moeder niet kon instaan voor de opvoeding van haar dochter, werd Besant opgevoed door een vriendin van de familie: Ellen Marryat. Besant kreeg een christelijke opvoeding.

21 de out. de 2008 · In 1867, Annie Wood married a vicar, Frank Besant, resulting in the birth of two children, but her increasingly irreligious views – when she refused to attend communion, Frank ordered her to leave the family home – led to a legal separation in 1873, with her husband retaining custody of their son (and she later lost custody of their daughter because of her progressive views).

She was raised by a widowed mother in a very religious environment and in 1867 married Frank Besant, a Church of England minister. However, when she became increasingly skeptical of Christian teachings and refused to silence her doubts, the marriage ended in separation (1873) and divorce (1878).
