Biography. Byrne was born in Paisley and studied at Glasgow School of Art from 1958 to 1963. He worked as an artist, playwright and theatre designer. Byrne used a variety of styles and techniques as he always tried to avoid being associated with particular styles or movements in art.
John Byrne (1940–2023) National Galleries of Scotland. Painter, designer and writer, born in Glasgow. He attended the School of Art there, 1958–61; Edinburgh College of Art, 1961–2; Glasgow School of Art, 1962–3; then a travelling scholarship took him to Italy in 1963–4.
Byrne was an acclaimed polymath, working in the visual arts, theatre, set design, illustration, film and TV, creating the acclaimed series Tutti Frutti in 1987. He has worked in printmaking since the late 1970s, using the facilities at Glasgow Print Studio to produce a diverse body of work.
