John Marshall Clemens inherited three slaves after the death of his father. Upon his marriage to Jane Lampton on May 6, 1923, he came into possession of three more slaves. The growing Clemens family thus started out with six slaves, but as John Marshall's business ventures successively failed, he sold these slaves to keep the family financially solvent.
