Augustus Dickens died 1866 in Chicago, at the age of 38, of tuberculosis. Although accused otherwise, Charles Dickens supported both Harriet, who remained in England, and Bertha financially. Bertha went into decline and appears to have taken her own life, by an overdose of morphine or laudanum, in 1868 two years after Augustus Dicken's death.

The funeral will take place on Sunday from his residence…to the place of interment.”. Bertha Phillips died on Christmas Eve, Dec. 25, 1868.
