Par son style à la fois réaliste, acéré et presque caricatural, il est considéré comme un des peintres figuratifs les plus importants, et un des plus exemplaires.
Lucian Freud stated that “my idea of portraiture came from dissatisfaction with portraits that resembled people. I would wish my portraits to be of people, not like them.” Such a confession denotes a certain amount of philosophical anguish as it presupposes that the artist, when painting somebody, is to an extent condemning them.

He studied at the Central School of Art and the East Anglian School of Painting (1939-42) under Cedric Morris. His first solo exhibition was at the Lefevre gallery, London in 1944.
