In 1805, St. Mary’s was chartered as a civil university in Maryland. Through the first half of the 19th century, a campus grew on Paca Street in Baltimore. It was anchored by a chapel designed by Maximilian Godefroy and dedicated on June 16, 1808 by Archbishop John Carroll. The chapel remains to this day as a national landmark.
