She taught briefly in the Buffalo schools until her father became president in 1850. An accomplished musician, she played the piano, harp, and guitar.

In 1832, the Fillmore family moved to Buffalo, New York. Abigail became a politician’s wife with Millard’s election to the New York Assembly in 1828 and to the House of Representatives in 1832.
