Tudo leva a crer que Abraão encontrou este idioma em Canaã, ao chegar ali, em vez de trazê-lo da Caldéia. Em Gênesis 31.47, vê-se que Labão, o sobrinho de Abraão, vivendo em sua terra, a Caldéia, falava aramaico.
