One common feature of these buildings is the alternation of piers and columns. Piers are large, thick pillars that support the weight of the building, while columns are thinner and more decorative.
Pointed Arches: Unlike the rounded arches of Romanesque buildings, Gothic cathedrals employed pointed arches, which distributed weight more efficiently and allowed for greater height.
