Land for the Burying Ground—and the rest of the block on which it lies—was originally part of Boston Common, but was turned over for other uses as demands for space grew. Oddly, the oldest gravestone to be found there dates from 1667, so perhaps the establishment of the Burying Ground represented good foresight, rather than an urgent need for gravesites.

Now named "Copp's Hill Burying Ground" (although often referred to as "Copp's Hill Burial Ground"), it is the second-oldest cemetery in Boston (after King's Chapel Burying Ground, which was founded in 1630). It contains more than 1200 marked graves, including the remains of various notable Bostonians from the colonial era into the 1850s.
