History of the World Endurance Championship Launching in 2012, World Endurance Championship racing arrived as the rebrand of the popular Intercontinental Le Mans Cup. The new WEC series included much the same rules, tracks and manufacturers, though initially included four racing categories compared to today’s three.

Eleven years after the series’s troubled debut (Peugeot pulled out on the eve of season one and it only survived when Toyota agreed to bring its programme forward) the health of the WEC is finally no longer in question.
Endurance racing has a rich history at Fuji Speedway, dating back to 1982 when a round of the Sportscar World Championship was contested. Located at the foot of the world-famous Mount Fuji, the track was rebuilt in 2005 to a high standard, fast layout.
