During these early years, Virginia Woolf not only lost both parents but in July 1897 her newly married half sister, Stella Duckworth, who was to some extent a mother substitute, died of peritonitis, and in 1906 her beloved brother Thoby died of typhoid caught on a holiday in Greece.
