It was finally named Leticia on December 15, 1867. It became a customs port in 1900, and was annexed to the Colombian territory in 1929. It was conquered by Peruvian troops in 1932, during the war between Colombia and Peru. Finally, the League of Nations successfully negotiated its reintegration into Colombia in 1933.

Por um longo período, Tabatinga foi um subdistrito de Benjamin Constant. A emancipação política de Tabatinga deu-se apenas em 10 de dezembro de 1981, pela Emenda Constitucional do Amazonas nº 12, que passou a determinar o subdistrito de Tabatinga um município autônomo. A instalação do município ocorreu em 1 de janeiro de 1983.
