The Old English tigras derives from Old French tigre, from Latin tigris, which was a borrowing from Classical Greek τίγρις 'tigris'. In the 1st century, Roman scholar Marcus Terentius Varro argued that the word tigris originates in the Armenian language and means 'arrow', which is also the name of the fast-flowing river Tigris.
