Monck or Monk, George, 1st duke of Albemarle, 1608–70, English soldier and politician. He took part (1625) in the disastrous expedition against Cádiz and fought against the Spanish in the Netherlands. After service in the Bishops' Wars, he was given a command in Ireland and was there when the English civil war began (1642).
General Monck fought the Dutch at sea again in the 1660s. He took charge of governing London during both the great plague of 1666, and the great fire of 1667. In 1665 King Charles had named "Our right Trusty, and right entirely Beloved Cousin and Counsellor, George Duke of Albemarle, Master of our Horse," one of the Lords Proprietor of Carolina.
