John Henry Newman nasceu em Londres, Inglaterra, no dia 21 de fevereiro de 1801. Estudou em Oxford, graduando-se em 1820. Quatro anos depois foi ordenado sacerdote anglicano. Em 1828 foi nomeado vigário da capela de Santa Maria, em Oxford, onde se tornou líder do movimento religioso de oposição à orientação oficial da Igreja Anglicana.
