Biografi. Etter studier ved Harvard og noen få år som lærer ble Emerson prest i en unitarmenighet i Boston. Hans kone døde i 1831 etter ett års ekteskap, og året etter sa han fra seg sitt prestekall på grunn av uenighet om nattverdssakramentet. Disse to krisene hjalp ham å legge grunnlaget for hans filosofiske livssyn.
