Introduction. Today Edmund Gosse (1849–1928) is best known for his novelistic memoir Father and Son: A Study of Two Temperaments. Gosse himself apparently felt that the work would slide rapidly into obscurity; he told George Moore in 1918 that it was “already almost forgotten” ( Thwaite 1984, p. 2, cited under General Overviews ).

A prolific English translator, literary historian, and critic, Edmund Gosse was an influential man of letters in his day. He introduced the work of Henrik Ibsen and other continental European writers to English readers. Born in London, England, on Sept. 21, 1849, Edmund William Gosse was the only child of the naturalist Philip Henry Gosse.
