  6. Frederic Leighton was one of Victorian Britain’s most renowned painters. Born in Scarborough, Leighton received academic training in various European cities. His first exhibited work Cimabue's Madonna , painted in Rome in 1855, was a triumph at the Royal Academy's exhibition and its success marked Leighton as one of the most promising artists of his generation.
