She was the fourth of five children, born to Charlotte Houghton, a governess, and Samuel Carrington, a railway engineer.

Dora Carrington. Dora Carrington, the second of the two daughters and fourth of the five children of Samuel Carrington, railway engineer, and his wife, Charlotte Houghton, was born in Hereford on 29th March 1893. The family moved to Rothsay Gardens in Bedford.
