Sunanda was the daughter of King Rama IV and one of his wives, Queen Piam Sucharitakul. Following the customs of the dynasty of the kingdom of Siam, Sunanda was one of the four wives (queens) of his half-brother King Rama V.

Sunandha Kumariratana war die älteste Tochter des Königs Mongkut und seiner Frau Piam. Sie war eine Halbschwester und zugleich die erste der vier Königinnen des Königs Chulalongkorn . Zwei von ihnen waren ihre jüngeren Schwestern, Savang Vadhana und Saovabha Phongsri.
