The portrait can be quite accurately dated between 1835-36 when Sir Ponsonby was Colonel of the 86th (Royal County Down) Regiment of Foot, wearing that uniform, also being Governor of Malta during this period. The portrait has recently been cleaned and conserved. It sports a period frame and has an applied plaque stating who the sitter is.
