Richard Assheton Cross was born on 30 May 1823. His life is well documented and, as we have seen in the 1891 census, he was then Secretary of State and a Viscount. He has his own entry in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography which tells us of his marriage to Georgiana Lyons, a daughter of Thomas Lyons of Appleton Hall near Warrington, in 1852.
