Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton, was an American singer and songwriter of blues and R&B. The Encyclopedia of Pop, Rock and Soul described Thornton saying "Her booming voice, sometimes 200-pound frame, and exuberant stage manner had audiences stomping their feet and shouting encouragement in R&B theaters from coast to coast from the early 1950s on".
Big Mama Thornton . On 13 August 1952, Willie Mae Thornton, now better known as Big Mama Thornton, recorded, with Johnny Otis and his orchestra a song that would become her signature forever: “Hound Dog.” And it was just a few days after that that she had become “Big Mama Thornton.”

22 de abr. de 2024 · Willie Mae “Big Mama” Thornton is best known for her version of the song “Hound Dog,” which was recorded in 1952 and seen as central to the beginning of rock and roll music, Maureen Mahon, a professor of music at New York University, told the Washington Post.
In 1966 she recorded the album Big Mama Thornton With The Chicago Blues Band on the Arhoolie label. She wrote a total of twenty-two blues releases. Thornton died in Los Angeles in 1984 of heart and liver complications, compounded by years of alcohol abuse.
