This fifth MGM Tarzan movie is one of the best installments in the entire series even if they did reuse a few stock shots from previous films since their budgets were cut after the death of Irving Thalberg.
Tom Conway, who played the villain, Medford, was brother of actor George Sanders. Sanders, was at one time married to Benia Hume (Tarzan Escapes). After the peak of his long career he committed suicide. ERB forced MGM to take out a scene where Tarzan threw back his head and laughed loud and long at the treasure hunters.
Tarzan’s (Johnny Weissmuller) jungle home, and his family, Jane (Maureen O’Sullivan) and Boy (Johnny Sheffield), are endangered by men acquisitive for treasure. After a trip team finds gold on Tarzan’s cliff, two of its associates abduct Jane and Boy in order to extract the place from Tarzan, who then attempts to save Jane and Boy, in the fifth entry in this franchise.
