Audiences loved seeing the Kettles as the stars of their own film and flocked to see Ma and Pa Kettle when it opened in April 1949. Its success spawned the follow-up Ma and Pa Kettle Go to Town (1950) and seven more films after that. Percy Kilbride and Marjorie Main were asked in 1956 why they thought the Ma and Pa Kettle films had been so popular.

Ma and Pa Kettle Back On the Farm ★★½ 1951 First-time grandparents, the Kettles have to deal with their daughter-in-law's snobby Bostonian parents and their parenting ideas. The family's also moved back to their ramshackle farm where Pa thinks he's found uranium, leading to all sorts of problems.
Tom Kettle, his wife Kim, and their new baby are living happily with his parents in their new home, until Kim's uppity parents arrive from Boston to visit. They proceed to take over the rearing of the baby and the whole Kettle household, and Ma and Pa Kettle decide to move back to their ramshackle farm house. There they discover uranium on their property--or think they did.
