Franz Liszt werd op 22 oktober 1811 geboren in Raiding, tegenwoordig gelegen in het oosten van Oostenrijk, destijds onder de naam Doborján in het westen van Hongarije. Vader Adam Liszt ontdekte het grote muzikale talent van zijn zoon toen deze zes was. Op zijn elfde ging Franzi in Wenen in de leer bij Carl Czerny en Antonio Salieri.
