Cassel Hospital was founded and endowed in 1919 by the philanthropist Ernest Cassel. Established as the ‘Cassel Hospital for Functional Nervous Disorders’, it was initially conceived that the hospital would focus on the treatment of shell-shocked soldiers.

For decades the Villa Cassel was used as a hotel after the death of its builder. For more than 40 years it has been the headquarters of the Pro Natura Centre Aletsch and houses an environmental education and nature conservation centre.
